week 8: Chain piecing and assembly
When I’m assembling a quilt top, I like to chain piece, so the process goes faster. Because let’s be honest, when you’re that close to the finish line, it’s hard to wait! You want to see that gorgeous quilt top ASAP, right??
Stack your blocks by style and get ready to organize them in rows.
You’re going to make stacks of each column. Refer back to your pattern and start with the first column on the left. Make a pile of the first column of blocks with the top left corner block on the top of your pile, and the bottom left corner block on the bottom of your pile. Then repeat for the second column and so on.
Take your top block from pile 1 and sew it to the top block from pile 2. This is your top row. Make sure the sub blocks are oriented in the correct direction. Then take the next block from each pile and sew them together. This is your 2nd row. Keep going until you have sewn all of the blocks in both piles together.
Don’t do anything to your strips yet, just take the third pile of blocks (column 3) and set that next to your sewing machine. Now take those strips and make sure you are sewing with column 2. Sew on the next pile of blocks to the column 2 side of your strips. Your block orientation won’t matter except on the edges so watch that carefully!!
Continue this process until you have sewn all your blocks in rows.
Now you can snip your rows apart and press them. I pressed mine toward the plus blocks or the background squares/rectangles.
Take row 1 and row 2. Line them up, right sides together, nest and pin your seams, then sew! Repeat until all your rows are sewn together.
The last step will be your borders. Don’t forget to add them!! I’ve still got to sew mine on, as you can see. I can’t wait to see all your finished quilts!! Let the quilt parade begin!!
