week 5: cross blocks & sub blocks
I had a very special helper this week. My husband Matt (aka @themanbehindthequilt) was getting a tutorial from me and we documented the process. He’s making this fun blue and silver version of the Uppercross Cottage quilt and I’m excited to see it finished. Want to see how he did?? Let’s do it.
First, we are cutting our Block 5 strips, the thicker ones, and cutting them into Block 6 pieces. Matt is using the strip ruler to cut his out. Remember the trick of lining up your ruler with the seam, or in this case, seams.
Matt did a great job cutting out his blocks…and if you look closely, you might even catch a glimpse of his face.
The trickiest part this week will be making sure you sew the four patch blocks with the correct placement. I’ve made this mistake before so please don’t do it, or you and your seam ripper will be spending some time together. Check your placement carefully, so the four patch blocks mirror each other the way you see below.
I like to pin in place when I sew my Block 6 pieces on so I get really clean points on my blocks. Luckily, Matt didn’t poke his fingers or drop any of my pins on the floor.
Refer to your pattern and make the number of Cross Blocks and Sub Blocks listed for your size. Press seams open as I did below.
