The Upperross Quilt was inspired by Jane Austen and the beautiful old manor houses she refers to in her novels. In particular, Uppercross, the home of the Musgrove family from the novel, Persuasion, has always been a favorite of mine. In Persuasion, they refer to the “Great House” that should feel stuffy and formal, but instead feels lively and comfortable. The family dynamic makes it a happy place that Anne, the main character, is happy to visit. This feeling of comfort amidst the grandeur of the home is what inspired my Uppercross pattern.
The Classic version of the Uppercross quilt is a simple, 2-color design. When I first designed this pattern I made it in black and cream and it is so elegant.
The contemporary version adds a third color to the plus blocks. In my cover quilt, I used Libery of London Arley Gardens and it’s the sweetest little pop of floral.
A modern take on the Uppercross quilt, Uppercross Cottage has larger blocks and instructions for a scrappy, fat quarter friendly version.
The Uppercross cottage pattern came to life when I had a fat quarter bundle of fabric that I wanted to make into the Uppercross pattern. The fat quarters weren’t enough fabric, so I made fewer blocks but made them a little bigger and Uppercross Cottage was born. It has a slightly more modern feel, and I imagine it lying in a cozy chair by the fire in a small cottage.
I had the privilege of working with some of the most talented quilters and makers. They helped me so much in this process and I couldn’t have done it without them. Here is a beautiful glimpse of their work. Please check them out on instagram to see more of what they do.
First we will look through all the Uppercross versions, but keep scrolling for the Uppercross Cottage versions!!
